Hyde900 will once again be putting on their annual community dig on the site of Hyde Abbey, the final resting place of Alfred the Great. Previous digs have uncovered the remains of the church and cloisters in the gardens of willing residents, who live in what was the Inner Close of the abbey. Finds include much of the materials of construction of the abbey, which was largely destroyed in the years following the Dissolution. Recent digs have revealed the vast foundations of the church and cloisters of the abbey. All trenches excavated have contained moulded stone, tiles and other remains of the abbey and the 18th century prison which was subsequently built over the site of the abbey church.

The dig is open to all aged 5 and upwards who can take part in 2-hour sessions. Costs per session are £12, reduced to £8 for Hyde900 members (membership can be taken out at the time of booking). Children under 11 are free, but all under 18 have to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Those interested in taking part can register their interest on the Hyde900 website: www.hyde900.org.uk
