Colchester Archaeological Group and Fordham History Society, with permission from The Woodland Trust are carrying out ongoing excavations on a Roman Site at Fordham Hall, Essex.

Geophysics, field-walking, trial trenching and finds from Phase I in 2015 all suggested significant Roman activity on the site.

Phase II excavations, begun in 2016 and due to finish this year, have involved open area excavation over the footprint of the suspected Roman building. Finds to date have indicated that this was a high status site, with a bath house and colonnade or portico, marble fittings, painted plaster interiors and numerous finds demonstrating the wealth of the owners.

  2. Hi, will you still be on the dig at Fordham Hall or any where else in the South East in 2017? I’m now retired and would be interested in joining you on any dig you may be on, one thing though I have no experience. I’m based in Welwyn Garden City, Herts.

  3. Hi, We are considering a holiday to the uk in April this year (2019) and would love to participate in a dig. We have a 15 year old daughter considering archaeology as a career. I also have some surveying experience, and am happy to assist your local survey team. Just wondering what opportunities are available. Thanking you jody
