Looking to gain more fieldwork experience? Interested in deeply stratified urban archaeology? Then join us in historic York this summer!

Located a stone’s throw from the city’s most complete medieval gatehouse, we will be digging in the shadow of the York’s famous Bar Walls to investigate a site that can hopefully tell us about working-class life in the Victorian Age, the 1644 Siege of York and how the site was used from the medieval period through to the area’s prehistoric origins. Oh, and there is also the small matter of a lost medieval church!

Whether you’re studying archaeology, or just want to try it out, our project is equally suitable for beginners and more experienced individuals and will offer comprehensive training in the key skills of archaeological excavation and recording. In addition, daily sessions will give introductions to specialisms such as pottery dating, small finds, conservation and stratigraphic analysis.

All of the excavation and recording will be carried out by the trainees taking part with guidance from professional archaeologists and the project is 100% funded by the people taking part. This is real people-powered archaeology, see you in the trench!
